Member Towns

The District now consists of 31 member towns. Each town exercises one vote on the Governing Board through an appointed representative. The East Central Vermont Telecommunications District was established upon passage of Act 41 in 2015, which acknowledged the existence of the District formed at Town Meeting that year pursuant to the requirements of the Act, which created VSA 30 Chapter 82 "Communications Union Districts".

Prior to organizing as a District, 23 of the towns were signatories to an inter-local contract whose language is echoed in the CUD law. While the legislation was working its way through the statehouse, five of the towns voted to approve identical warrants forming the "East Central Vermont Telecommunications District" at 2015 town meeting, because the draft law called them telecommunications districts, not communications union districts. The selectboards of the other 18 towns voted to join the District as provided for in the new law, and on January 1, 2016, the inter-local contract was dissolved and the new special purpose municipality took its place. In May of 2020, four additional towns that had requested membership were approved, and another four joined in August 2020.
